You need to get the largest display case there is. The XL whatever (it's HUGE) and then fill the display area with gems (doesn't matter what kind) and then click on the display, and option will come up to "activate". You click "activate" and it says "irreversible transfigurification $500". Click that and suddenly the gems disappear within the display...lightening starts shooting out and within a few seconds, up comes a skull made out of the gems!!
One time I did it with gems and instead of a skull I got a uncut "Soulpeace" with $4,528 that's said to be useful in curing curses and spells you may find your sims under! It will more than likely cure mummy curses, I'm sure.
Then I decided to try other things besides gems. I started putting those cheap bowls and broken bowls on it. When it was full, I click 'activate" and "irreversible transfigurification" and the stuff disappeared inside of it, the lighting shot out and suddenly, to my surprise, up pops a Mysterious Mr. Gnome!! I did it again with more bowls and broken bowls and the cheap gargoyles, cheap *****, etc and each time a "Mysterious Mr. Gnome" would pop up! I have now created 4 of them...lol.
I'm going to go out and find a bunch of gems and minerals around Riverview and put them in and see what I can get!
Well, I just wanted to share my new discovery and toy...lol. Have fun and please post what you get when you do it!
Edited to fix typo

The piece of "Soulpeace" it turned my gems into the first time...I got it cut into a heart shape and when I got it back in the mail it said it was 48.36g and worth $22,640!!!!! That's a keeper!
Also...it only accepts CUT gems and smelted metals. Don't bother with space rocks though...it only turns them into more space rocks...lol.
Right now I'm waiting for a ton of gems and metals to come back in the mail and I will try different combinations and come back and update this with what I get I'm hoping it's not just skulls cause that would be boring...unless they come in difference colors...lol. The 3 I have now are turquoise.
Edited to add an update:
I've found a few "formulas":
The "formula" for "Soulpeace", which appears to be the cure for mummy curses and other curses. Anyway, the formula is just mixing a bunch of different cut gems together. The 2nd one I made was smaller than the first one but it was 24.05g and worth $2,948...I had also had it cut in a heart shape.
I also discovered a new (and expensive!) metal....Compendium. The description said that "scientists think it came from another planet due to it's molecular structure."
I made it 2 different ways, so I'm not sure if it's mixing ALL metals or if it's mixing silver and palladium.
The first time I mixed 3 iron, 3 silver and 2 palladium and I got a Compendium ingot that was 3,421.69g and worth $2,633!! The 2nd & 3rd ones were just silver and palladium....1 was 4,407.79g and worth $3.026 and the other was 4,3965g and worth $2,926!!
Then I mixed 5 gold ingots with 3 gems and I got a "Mysterious Mr. Gnome". So, it appears that metals and gems mixed together make Gnomes.
Tomorrow I'm going to travel to all 3 countries, and get all the different gems and metals I can get and come back home and see what I can make...lol. This is SO fun!!

Alright, mixing cut gems I think gives yo ua skull cut each time. The amount of the gem you put on increases the chance of you getting the certain gem.
Examples- 8 Opal cut gems on it gives you a 100% chance at Opal Skull.
4 Citrine and 4 Rubys gives a 50/50 chance for both.
All 8 being different is 1/8 of a chance for each gem.
EDIT- After re-reading your post you said you got soul peaces by mixing the gems. Hmm, after mixing 10 groups of cut gems I only got skulls. (2 repeats)
Mixing 8 different smelted metals gives you the chance to get Supernovian. Which the description was like the mystical forces used to made this make it far better then the rest of your metal collection.
Mixing collectible relics got me a piece of something each time. (piece of dive well, piece of sacrophagus, or piece of movale statue.)
Mixing common relics, like ***** and bowls resulted in Mr. Mysterious Gnome each time.
You CANNOT mix bugs or un-cut gems.
And lastly, mixing 8 different skull gems sadly just gives you a random skull gem back. :/
I LOVE the metal (supernovian) and the bottom right skull. (skull cut sepherian, i think... it aint geode)
I just experimented with my whole collection afetr reading this, and I obviously didn't save cause of the fact I used up all of my precious collection. And also I mixed the 8 skulls together and got a alabaster one back in exchange. >.<
That would of been a HUGE waste if I saved. Lol.
