For those having this issue with High End Loft Stuff:
After a call to tech support (and 45 minutes on hold), I was told that the issue is with any updates you may have installed to the original game. The remedy is to uninstall the game, reinstall it, and then install the stuff pack BEFORE installing any game updates.
The customer support rep also mentioned that this same problem can occur with the World Adventures expansion. The remedy is supposedly the same: uninstall the game, reinstall it, and then install the expansion before updating.
If you have saved game files that you don't want to lose by uninstalling, you can easily back them up first. Just find your "The Sims 3" folder (probably in Documents -> Electronic Arts -> The Sims 3). Copy it to your desktop or somewhere else before you uninstall. Then after you reinstall the game, use this saved folder to replace the "new" auto-populated folder the game will install for you.
Good luck!
