MamaGoth: I'm confused about depreciation too. Why aren't people just building in Edit Mode? (Is it because they can't change the light colour?)How much can you actually save by depreciating anyway?

Hey judges, just wondering if you guys downloaded my latest house, the Caliente's Rabbit-Hole, cuz that's the one i posted yesterday last minute, sorry if you had already judged other one, haven't seen any comments for my new one so that's why i was wondering

You are correct - we're supposed to build in edit town mode. I think some of our newer members might not be aware of that.

By moving a family in and building the house with them on the lot, you get a LOT more depreciation. I'm not sure of the exact formula, but it's significant. To level the playing field (especially for those of us with the patch, that can't go back to Edit Town and cut costs), that's not supposed to happen. I'm guessing that with a challenge that's as difficult as a starter people may have thought that was the way to get everything they wanted.

I'm not sure of the exact formula either, but I was only a few dollars from the $20,000 limit (in edit mode) before importing sims to play test my lot for this challenge and take pictures. Once I was done (after only a few sim days) the lot cost had already dropped by over $2000

. To keep things fair, I only bring sims in once I'm sure I'm done with decorating and don't purchase anything additional once they're in the house. I also make a note of the lot value before importing them and report that as my final cost rather than the depreciated value.

Wow, so it is like a 10% decrease or something (I am bad at math, sorry). That's a lot. It is good to know, especially if I make a starter for fun sometimes (I could play it for a sims lifetime and see how much I can save

cleodel, judges give you a few comments and I'm sure if you PM your judge on Builder's Boulevard most of them will be happy to give you further help in how you can do better. Don't be nervous though! It's great if you win and if not [I myself haven't won] you just try to improve and eventually you will win.
