Creatures of the Night - #72 & 73 Beginner-Intermediate

aussiedonna: A house this size should have approximately 30 pictures. I felt like I missed out on so much of the house because there were only 13 photos. You mixed the requested black and white well with the blue you chose. The interiors are very modern from the choice of furniture to patterns and textures; I really enjoyed the shade of blue and patterns and textures you chose. The architecture is very modern and I love the unique shape of the house. Not too fond of the blue used for the driveway/parking lot. Perhaps black would have been more acceptable.

izzie_110: The architecture is amazing! Very modern; the house has a unique shape. The overall layout of the house is fantastic. I love the large windows. I found your choice of patterns for the interior walls and floors to be busy. They made the house feel more like an art deco than a modern. Moderns tend to have more solid textures and colors than patterns. I feel the kitchen in the entertainment/pool area should be slightly bigger to accommodate as many guests as possible... after all, the house does include 5 bedrooms with double beds.

AND THE WINNER IS...

aussiedonna

Fall Designer Showdown: Beginner

Only one entry this time around! Congrats to Jeca0111 for winning this challenge! Here are your comments and suggestions:

Jeca0111:
You took what was a drab, uninteresting house and turned it into a cool and vibrant beach home! I liked your use of colors and patterns (the floral pattern upstairs looked really nice with the black border). I also liked how you changed the windows to large ones to take advantage of the great view. You might have added a curtain in the bathroom though, so the neighbors don’t get a show! Some things I might have changed…the brick pattern you used for the foundation was very busy and kind of distracting. Perhaps if it were all one color it wouldn’t feel that way? I also would have liked to see something out on the deck. I know if I lived in that house, I would spend a lot of time outside! And it would have been great to see your design of the landscaping to match the new design of the house. Overall, fantastic job on this redesign! I hope you keep entering and showing us what you’ve got!

How are all of you? Doing good I hope I'm filling in so... great job everyone! Maybe I'm just used to Beginners but you all did wonderful

Bouquetcatcher: Cool concept, the color pallet is lacking but I guess that was your point... I think the house would have looked better with a lower roofline and more... pizazz? You did your concept nicely but it was just flat you know?

Dienray : What a cool house! I liked the story you gave it and the bomb shelter was a clever idea. It wasn't overly Halloweeny but that's okay

Karima : First off I love the couple, awesome looking sims! The rooms were all very unique and creepy. Make sure not use the 'x' key in camera man mode though, it really distorts your pictures.

mgolden27
: A tacky but cute house. Your decorating is exactly my style: very clean. The one eyesore inside was the rug in the play area, that stood out a lot. I cringed a little at the outside because I loved the inside but it IS a Halloween showcase after all so pumpkin shaped houses are fine

mryjn1976
: *scolds for having no media* but none the less I loved the lot, I wish I could have seen more! The outside looks superb and the inside shots you showed looked fantastic. Good job (GIVE SOME MEDIA NEXT TIME!)

3rd Place: mgolden27
2nd Place: Karima
1st Place: mryjn1976

Just when some of you thought you were out of my clutches, I re-emerge like a vampire to suck the blood out of your builds! Boo-waa-haa-haa! Or something like that. . . Actually, I’m just substituting this one time for your usual judge, Tristarin, who needed to take a break. And without further ado:

First Place

Comments: What I especially like about Creature Feature is the use of natural stone and wood throughout your very modern 3-story house. Black and white, even with red thrown in, can be somewhat monotonous, but your use of natural colors as well as a deft use of texture and pattern, made each room interesting and brought a cohesion to the house as a whole. The light wood in the kitchen and pool areas, for example, contrasts beautifully with the black, white and red in the rest of the house. Great job!
Suggestions: Some of your photos were rather dark and hard to make out, and I would have liked to see overhead shots of each floor to get a better idea of the layout. I also wasn’t sure whether you included a party area by the ground floor pool.

Second Place

Comments: Reflective Notion is a very creative, modern build! I love the mirrored outside surfaces. The seemingly simple outside holds a very effective layout inside. You make good use of your contrasting color (red), and I like that you used shades of gray as well as black and white. The new items in Late Night were also put to good effect; I thought the pool area was especially beautiful.
Suggestions: The long, abstract painting in one of the guest bedrooms might have been raised a bit (one can do that now with LN) because it was partially covered by the bed. Some of the rooms seemed a bit sparse (area rugs, perhaps?) , and I think a video game system might have been nice in the media room. And do vampires really like mirrors?

Comments: Nightwalker Modern has an attractive footprint on its lot and an efficient layout. I like the clean, modern lines in the interiors, and I love that you chose mulberry as your contrasting color! (Everyone else chose red.) The rooftop party area was also an inspired touch.
Suggestions: I’m afraid I can’t say more about your build, because you need at least twice as many pictures as you provided. You also should include more close-ups. I had a hard time seeing what patterns and textures you chose, and really wished that I could have, because I could at least tell that you are a very talented builder!

Comments: You do modern architecture really well, and Transition is a fine example of your skill. The interesting outside shapes make for intriguing inside spaces. I like that you have the entry on the second level (first floor to you), and the interior is well laid out on all three floors. And I love the third level walkway, the terrace and the use of red on the front exterior!
Suggestions: The black and white interior created a certain sameness that might have been broken up with texture, pattern or your contrasting color (red). The pantry area with the red wall in the kitchen, for example, was more inviting than the rest of the monotone kitchen. Although modern can be on the sparse side, I still think you might have included a few more décor items. And since the clients didn’t like flowers, I might have done all my landscaping with green shrubs and trees.

Comments: The symmetrical front, dark stone and minimal windows of Modern Estate make the house seem somewhat forbidding—a good thing, I think, in the eyes of the clients, who value their privacy. I also appreciated that despite the clients saying they wanted “minimal landscaping” you paid attention to how the house sits on the lot and landscaped around it appropriately. There are some wonderful touches on the inside like the quirky statues in the entry hall, and the office is particularly fine in bringing together color, texture and pattern to create a sleek, modern design.
Suggestions: Some areas of the house seem sparse; a few more décor items might have been in order. Also, your choice of Mission furniture in the media room seems a bit old fashioned. Certainly “antiques” can be used in a modern build, but perhaps as accent pieces rather than the main style of furnishing.

You are all very talented builders, and it was my privilege and delight to be your stand-in judge!

Hi folks,

I would just like to let you know that I would be more than willing, at any time, to be a judge or a back-up judge for any category. In the past, Anjubee and Addict have asked me to judge a category, and I thoroughly enjoyed doing it.

Let me know if you need any help.

All the best,
Stu

Creatures of the Night - Advanced Results

Freynas – Wow! That indoor pool around the dance floor is amazing. Nice use of black and white. Good choice of purple as the accent – quite dramatic. Sophisticated living areas. Like the open floor plan. Great party pad. Love the bubble machines! Great jam space. Love the bar. Cool hot tub area. Great pattern in the kitchen. Nice media rom. Cool hanging sculpture! Like the use of the new fish tanks. Nice living areas downstairs. Awesome media room! Great use of the carpet tool to create geometric effect. Great bedrooms with crypt beds. Hard to imagine that this is a CC free build! I’ve got to get on finding some of these objects.

Suggestions: Perhaps a bit more attention to the rear of the house. Accent color might have been a little over-used.

StuArt – Hmmm…. Looks like you added a ghost to the house during the build process? The building just blends into the landscape – it looks very organic. Love the use of the new fountains and the fountain too. Fantastic open layout inside. Great use of glass and aquarium to achieve this. Nice media area with two-row seating. Love the slanted architectural bits outside. Great music area and inddor fountain/pool. Cool skylight. Very sophisticated décor throughout. Love the layring of the lot. Love the underground rooms. I was a little worried about the clients at first with so many open windows, but you solved that nicely. Fantastic bedrooms and baths. Adore the kitchen with surrounding bar. Great choice of accent color.

Suggestions: A little more lighting downstairs would have showed details better. Downstairs layout was a bit linear. Even though they don’t love landscaping, a bit more detail could have been added here.

And the winner is...

Very difficult decision! There were both fantastic houses, but the slight edge went to StuArt on this one. Congrats to both on such amazing builds

Congrats everyone!!! And thank you to both judges for your comments and suggestions. Scoiattolo, thanks for the tip on more photos. I was actually afraid to take too many - now I know better! I'll do more detail shots next time. Good job all entrants, beautiful builds! Many of them now reside in my game
