They happen randomly if you have the ambitions expansion pack.

Meteor showers happen randomly with the Sims 3 Ambitions EP. If you spot one, it's usually just huge space rocks (meteors in another term) falling down from the skies and landing in certain areas. The meteor might either kill your Sim or break up into little pieces, meaning your Sims can collect space rocks which were formerly part of the meteor. Be careful when you witness a meteor shower and be sure to protect your Sims!

I am a fan of the Hunger Games.

I've had ambitions for about a year and it's only happened once. It is really cool. The sky gets all dark and then your sim says something like "Why is the sky getting dark?". Then, they look up at the sky and start pointing up. Eventually the huge-normous meteor plows right into the ground. I was "lucky" enough to only get singed and not caught on fire. It leaves a lot of valuable metors nearby.

Funny I was just reading about this on sims wiki.

It said that there is a 2% chance of a sim being hit by a meteor while stand outside.

It's a 4% chance if the sim is using some kind of object outside.

So its a 4% chance if they continually use the telescope outside?

Yup or anything really. Like a chemistry set, but it did say using the telescope out side increases the chances.

It also said that a meteor never aims for children or toddlers, but they may be impacted if they're close to the sim it aimed for. They also can apparently ruin buildings.

It's happened to me once, and I had no clue it could even happen so stupid me, (my sim was outside sculpting) I let him continue and he died from getting smashed by one. :/ I was kind of mad. But it was my bad!

My cousin had an experience on my game. It was funny because I never had one and she didn't either and the family she had just made the mom was struck by it.
