Chapter One: Defiance
Two shattered souls embedded as one,
No one can stop what they have begun;
An impossible love, a hushed romance
But they both know they’ll never get the chance.
One cast forever in the light,
The other an outcast in the dead of night
Forever apart;
Forever alone,
Their love will never be their own.

It was completely and utterly silent in the trees surrounding our secret spot. Not the eerie, disturbing silence—but the good kind, the kind that tells you whether somebody has followed you or not.
Turn me around and point me back to home
I walked out into the open cautiously, making sure I didn’t step on any fallen tree branches as I made my way over to the bench closest to the water. I kept my eyes on the trees, though—I’ve done this over a thousand times before, but with sneaking around, you could never be too careful.
I looked around again, paranoid. If anybody followed me tonight we were done for. We couldn’t have the news leaking before we had the chance to say it ourselves. The lanterns danced in the water, carefully swaying from side to side and the moon reflected brilliantly in the water.
I laughed again, I still remember that day when he first brought me here—before then I hadn’t known this place existed. From my understanding, nobody else knew it existed except him, and then he passed the secret onto me by bringing me here.
“What is this place?” I remembered questioning. He just grinned at me.
“Our secret spot, babe,”
After a few minutes had passed, I looked around again for any sign of an orange figure. He should’ve been here by now…he’s never been late before. This was a big day for me—er, us—because we were going to come out with our relationship to the rest of the town tomorrow. I refused to lie about our relationship any longer—I was sick of not being able to go out in public holding his hand. We had lived too long with keeping this a secret.
I'm getting lost more everyday, and I can't tear myself away
For hundreds of years there has been a strict, unspoken rule in Berry Shores against being with a berry that was not the same color as you. For about as long as I could remember I have never seen a…let’s say a blue berry with a purple berry walking around holding hands. It just didn’t happen. I was used to seeing purples with purples, blues with blues and pinks with pinks. We could still interact with berries of different colors…but dating is completely off-limits. I have seen pink my whole life…
From the stars in my eyes with no light
My house, berry even my car is
pink. Right about now…I was pretty sick of seeing pink. I couldn’t get married to somebody who was pink, I couldn’t live the rest of my life seeing mainly just pink. So, he and I are going to change the minds of these biased people of Berry Shores. We are going to make seeing other berries of different colors alright.
I stood, becoming too agitated to sit any longer. It was just wrong. There was nothing wrong with dating—or even marrying and having children with different berries. I have no idea where this unspoken, stupid rule had come from anyways. I was too wrapped up in my own mind that I didn’t hear the twig snap behind me, or the footsteps creeping up.
Suddenly, somebody swept me up into their arms and gave me a quick, passionate kiss on my lips. At first, I was way too startled to respond, but then I realized that the arms were orange and I giggled and kissed him back.
“Did I startle you?” he whispered into my ear, sending the all too familiar goosebumps up my back.
Here are my terms, have some faith in me
“Not at all,” I joked with him, and he slowly sets me down back onto the ground. My heart started to accelerate because of how close he was.
“Liar,” he laughed lowly in my ear, sending chills up my spine. I absolutely loved his laugh—it was one of the things that had drawn me towards him when we first met.
“Where were you?” I felt the words leave my open lips. I looked up into his beautiful orange eyes that melted my heart.
“I got held up at work,” he sighed. “I really tried to make it out of there on time.”
“It’s alright, I get it,” I whispered, internally sighing as well. He had a part time job at the bookstore, and his boss, Mr. Sundae was a grumpy old man who liked to grouch about everything. I always insisted that he could do better than work at a bookstore if he wanted to, but he just brushed it to the side saying that it was just a job until he got a better opportunity.
And I'll let you be who you need to be
For a couple of minutes we just stood there, and he held me. We watched the moonlight dance on the water, and the waterlily lanterns light the water up.
"Beautiful," I breathed. I could feel his breath on my neck, making it impossible to concentrate on anything else.
"Not as beautiful as you," he whispered. I couldn't help but laugh.
"Flattery will get you everywhere," I joked.
"I can't help that it's the truth," he responded.
“Do you still want to do this or not?” I asked him suddenly, turning around so I could put my hands on both sides of his handsome face.
“I’m all in for this one, Cres,” he said. “I’m just worried that you aren’t.”
I pulled back to look at him further. “I want to, believe me, I’m not going to back out.” I insisted. “I want to be able to go out in public, without having to act like you’re just some guy I went to school with and that I could care less if I ever speak to you again. I want to go out and be
with you.”
Life on the moon couldn't be any stranger
“The consequences…I’m not sure you’ll like the fallout…things are seriously going to change, I don’t think you realize how much…” He started, analyzing the possible aftermath, but I put my finger on his lips before he could continue any further.
“I don’t care. It’s about time this town gets a wrench thrown in their traditions.” I muttered back.
Life on the moon wouldn't feel as far away
He still had that off look in his eye, though. No matter how hard he tried, he couldn’t hide that from me. “You really want this, don’t you?”
“Kale,” I spoke his name, and he laughed at the touch of annoyance in my tone, “I want this. I want you. I…” my voice trailed off. I have never before spoken the words out loud before—we never knew when we could get caught, which could’ve been at any moment. But I have thought them many times when I was with him.
Nothing was holding me back now.
I throw my arms around him and bring his head closer to mine, so I could whisper into his ear, "I love you,"
The life that I knew it's through and I'm gonna need you more than ever
“And I love you,” he murmured, his eyes shut, and then he leaned down to whisper into my ear, “but I love you more.” I just giggled and shook my head, my mind echoing his voice when he said he loved me. I had known it for some time now, but it felt even more set in stone now that he had said it out loud, that we should be together. That this was right.
He suddenly pulled back. “How long have we been together?” he asked out of the blue.
I'm alone in a crowded room, it's like life on the moon
“About four years…why?” I inquired, confused on what how long we have been together has to do with anything.
He grinned at me. “Because I have a big surprise for you,” I raised my eyebrow. In the past three years that we have been seeing each other, he has never gotten anything for me…ever. We were venturing into new territory here.
“Oh?” I questioned as his knee sunk into the grass and he reached for his pocket.
“Hang on one second,” he muttered. “Cres, I have never been more certain about anything ever in my life like I am certain about this…about us…”
Just to know that you're here by my side
I don’t really know what I was expecting, but I knew for a fact that it wasn’t
that.
“Crescendo Orchid Moon, I have loved you ever since the moment I saw you four years ago, in Mrs. Lemon’s homeroom senior year. From that moment I wanted you to be mine and mine alone. I loved every secret minute that we spend together. I love your smile, your eyes…everything about you. Will you make an even bigger scandal with me…” he started to open the box and, that’s about when my heart completely stopped beating in my chest. “Will you marry me?” he asked, opening the box completely to reveal a sparkling amethyst ring.
Getting lost in my own atmosphere
For a while, I could only stare at the beautiful ring and then his face. My breath had completely caught in my throat and I couldn’t breathe. This wasn’t real…it was too perfect to be real. Then, I realized that his smile started to fall quickly since I still didn’t give him an answer. “Yes!” I choked out, receiving the vital oxygen that I needed to choke out the rest. “Yes, yes yes! Of course I’ll marry you!”
He grinned at me as he slid the ring onto my finger. It fit perfectly, and I couldn’t stop staring at it. It was so beautiful; I couldn’t believe that he picked it out all by himself. I was even more certain that this was right…we belong together. Emotions swirled within my chest, and my vision was starting to blur. I throw my arms around him and pulled him into the biggest hug I could manage.
Stars in the sky are the stars in my eyes
“You really know how to knock a girl off her feet and make her speechless, don’t ya?” I asked, trying to keep the tears in my eyes from breeching the perimeter and falling down my cheeks.
He chuckled, low in my ear. “Tomorrow’s a big day.”
I smile my biggest smile at him. “It’s going to be you and me against the world.”
