I tried to download some CC today and discovered that iTunes has decided that all .rar files are iTunes files . When I download any .rar CC (i.e. most CC) it pops up with the itunes logo and I can't unrar or install it. Any attempt to open the file results in iTunes opening, itunes then does nothing because it can't play a hair mesh. It's even eaten my sims 2 CC.

I would just uninstall itunes (because I HATE it) but it has all my 1100+ songs and i don't want to loose those.

Any ideas?

Hi,

Are you using Mac or PC? It sounds like the file association for RAR archive files is mismatched. You can try fixing this by doing the following:

(Using Mac OSX as an example)
1 - Right-click the RAR file to get a contextual popup menu
2 - Look for an option that says Open With
3 - In another popup window that appears, select Other...
4 - In the file browser that appears, look for the application that can read RAR files (by default Stuffit Expander)
5 - Once the application is highlighted, click on the checkbox at the bottom of the file browser that says Always Open With
6 - The RAR file should now extract properly

I *knew* iTunes was evil

But yeah, file association screw up. If you find the winRar program, you can open them that way, alternatively just re-install winRar, it should reclaim the rar extension, but iTunes may want it back for it's evil doings...

Thanks everyone for responding!
I tried updating itunes but it was still the same so I redownloaded winrar. I swear I had it before but it seems to have dissappeared, perhaps iTunes defeated it in a duel to the death for the .rar files Even though I made sure to tell winrar to reclaim .rar files, they still come up with the itunes logo but now I can follow Nichaedemus' steps and unrar them, which gets itunes to let go of them.

The evil iTunes has been defeated!!
