NVidia Drivers 191.07 - Crash to Desktop

The latest driver update for NVIDIA video cards (191.07) has an apparent conflict with The Sims 3. Your game may not run properly (or at all) if you're using these drivers.

Until a more permanent solution becomes available, we recommend reverting to an older release of the NVIDIA drivers to ensure that The Sims 3 runs smoothly.

http://easims.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/easims.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=23473

-Big Guy-

Re:NVidia Drivers 191.07 - Crash to Desktop

Hi,

The driver issue mentioned has already been confirmed by at least one user with an NVidia GeForce GTS 250. For reference, the original thread can be found here:

http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/112199.page

Note that the link to the NVidia website mentioned in the EA Support article above is for Windows XP 32-bit, but there are indeed other OS versions available. Please refer the following list for your particular drivers to download:

190.62 WHQL NVidia Drivers

Windows XP 32-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_190.62_whql.html

Windows Server 2003 64-bit, Windows XP 64-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_190.62_whql.html

Windows 7 32-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_190.62_whql.html

Windows 7 64-bit, Windows Vista 64-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_190.62_whql.html

Update 11/26/09

NVidia has now released a new WHQL-certified version of the 195.62 GeForce/Ion reference drivers for NVidia graphics cards. If you are still using the 195.39 Beta NVidia drivers, it is advised that you uninstall them via Add or Remove Programs and update to the newer drivers. Please refer the following list for your particular drivers to download:

195.62 WHQL NVidia Drivers

Windows XP 32-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp_195.62_whql.html

Windows XP 64-bit, Windows Server 2003 64-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/winxp64_195.62_whql.html

Windows 7 32-bit, Windows Vista 32-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_195.62_whql.html

Windows 7 64-bit, Windows Vista 64-bit
http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_64bit_195.62_whql.html

For those using laptops, please visit your system manufacturer's website for the updated NVidia drivers when they become available. For help with identifying and installing the video drivers, please refer to the following EA Support article:

https://easims.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/easims.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=10711

Update 12/10/09

There is a known conflict with the 195.62 WHQL NVidia drivers and the Sims 3 game. If you have installed these drivers and are experiencing crash issues while using the launcher and/or starting the game, it is advised that you do the following:

1) Uninstall the 195.62 drivers and revert back to the 190.62 drivers until further notice. Uninstall the drivers via Add or Remove Programs only, as recommended by EA.
2) Bypass the game launcher by running the game executable directly.

For more details on this issue, please refer to the following sticky:

http://forum.thesims3.com/jforum/posts/list/140337.page

Re:NVidia Drivers 191.07 - Crash to Desktop

Wow.. I was wondering why it kept crashing. I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9600M GS running Windows Vista 64-bit on a HP Touchsmart. It always chooses to inconveniently crash after I haven't thought to save for a while. I suppose we're just going to wait for NVIDIA to send out a driver update? I hope it's not too long.. I can't revert back to the old drivers because a lot of the games I play require the more recent ones. Anyways.. good luck to everyone.

I have to reload my game because my pc crashed. It made me redo the drivers and now my game crashes every time I double click on the sims 3 icon to try to start up the game.

Edited for an update.. I used the link the OP provided and put the older driver updates back. It works now. Thanks so much!

G'day. Had the same problems running an NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT w/ 1024MB mem on an XP machine. I updated to the new NVIDIA 191.07 drivers a few days ago. Bad move! Luckily a quick Google search can solve almost anything these days!

The 'launcher' application would operate no-probs, but starting the game only led to a brief black screen and then return to the desktop (occasionally the wallpaper would disappear, and be replaced with an unusual pale blue?!)

After using the link kindly provided by Nichaedemus (the Nvidia site makes old drivers tough to find), I installed the previous 190.62 drivers.

The game now runs perfectly as before. Thanks to everyone for their helpful posts; hopefully EA will be able to come out with an update to resolve this soon.

Cheers

I just got my new computer yesterday 2 GForce GTX 295 cards in my computer and I cannot roll it back because it is all brand new.
Correct - if it a totally new PC that is on the latest drivers it will have problems so go download the older drivers from Nvidia's website. Once you have done that uninstall your existing drivers and then install the older ones and every thing will be OK.

Not rocket science - just basic system admin.

Kindest regards

John

I have just about had it with EA & the Sims! Every time a new game or ep launches, it takes them months to figure out why it won't work on certain systems. They release the specs & they obviously do not know their *** from their elbow! I have way better specs than the minimum & it still crashes, but only since the latest Sims 3 update in August. I have spent countless hours & $$ trying to fix this issue & the only reasonable thing I can think of is EA needs to get on the ball & really think about the fact that the economy is crap right now, but we are all still willing to drop between $50 & $70 for their games!!! Ever heard of customer service EA???

I got the geforce 8400 gs graphics card for my computer back in June and the game has worked fine on my computer until the past month when it has been crashing on me randomly (especially in create-a-sim) and over-heating. I've never experienced over-heating on my computer at all, as in never, until this past month. I think it is because of this new driver update. I also use Windows XP. I think I'm going to have to try the beta version. I hope it works.

My issue is even stranger. I had the 191.07 patch in my computer for a short time before I reformatted due to other unrelated issues. TS2 and TS3 actually played fine with it. Once I reformatted and installed the games, neither would work.

I'm wary of installing the 195 beta because I want to still play TS2 and I haven't seen any information on this issue relating to TS2, it's all about TS3 and there's nothing on the TS2 forums.

EDIT: I have now downloaded the beta driver and both games work fine.

I have similar issues

I have a 9100 and it doesn't work with the beta or older version. I'm on windows 7. Mine doesn't crash but it moves really really slow. I've tried the different drivers, uninstalling, reinstalling sims, changed to windows mode, defragged my computer twice and purchased WA since it's supposed to be compatible with windows 7 was hoping it would help. Nope still can't play sims 3.

Posted my DxDiag but the only thing they thought it might be was that I have a wide screen monitor. Which I've been using since June to play the sims 3. Played on High end graphic range with no issues and full screen. Now it takes about 5 minutes just for the sim to start moving even on low graphics.
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9500 GT, and I updated it last month, is that what's causing my game to crash? If so, is there any way I can "undo" the update?
If you're running Windows XP, try this:

First and foremost, create a system restore point before adding any program or changing any device on your computer. There's probably an easier way to do it than what I do...but I go to the Control Panel and click on "help and Support" in the left hand pane. From there I choose System Restore from the "pick a task" section and create a restore point. I'm not sure how else to access it if your system is not set up similar to mine. By creating a restore point, you can always revert your PC back to that time.

I have not tried this myself, but I have found an option to roll back your video device driver:

- Go to Control Panel and double click on System. This should open a System Properties Dialog Box
- In the System Properties Dialog Box, click on the tab titled "Hardware" and then click Device Manager. This should open the Device Manager window.
- In the Device Manager window, click on the "+" sign next to "display adapters". Hopefully you'll see your particular video device listed there. Double click on your video display device to open the properties dialog box.
- In the properties dialog box, click on the tab titled Driver, and choose "Roll Back Driver".

Hopefully this will work for you. Don't forget to create a restore point before trying just in case something doesn't work right.

Good luck!

-Big Guy-
It's all well and good to blame this problem on the Nvidia drivers but I don't believe this is the only reason the game crashes. I have had problems with the game crashing since I first installed it. My system came with an ATI video card and the game crashed. So I recently (within the last week) installed a Nvidia GTS 250 (per recommendations in the readme file for Sims 3) the game still crashed. I downloaded and installed the Nvidia drivers for my Vista 64-bit OS and guess what? The game still crashed. Thinking the game needed to reconfigure itself for the new hardware, I uninstalled and reinstalled the game and IT STILL CRASHES. I'm sorry but this is getting very frustrating. I have not ever received an error message when this occurs, just one minute the game is running and the next I'm looking at my desktop with no explanation at all.

Also frustrating is the fact that (when I do get to play) my sims no longer complete paintings. With the installation of WA sims are stuck in the painting animations but the paintings never become complete unless you stop the sim then have them continue painting two or three times. And one more thing, you can no longer hang sim paintings on the wall because they disappear but are still taking up space (you can't put anything else there) and to get rid of it you have to delete the wall and rebuild it.

I don't mean to be rude or a whiner, but PLEASE HIRE SOME TESTERS AND HAVE THEM ACTUALLY PLAY THE GAME BEFORE YOU RELEASE IT. I have a basic Gateway tri-core with Vista 64-bit operating system and until recently (when I put in the new graphics card) it was as/is from the factory. Most people buy computers and expect that they will run whatever software they put on them, so why can't you just buy some basic computers and test the game on them. Then try to come up with a "happy medium" patch that will make the game work at least passably well on all of them.

I'm a Sims fan, I have all three games and I was so excited and hopeful about Sims 3 that I ran out and bought it the minute it hit the shelves, literally, I was there when they put the first box on the shelf at midnight and I grabbed it and headed for the checkout stand, lol.

Please help with my problems if you can, I would really like to be able to play with Sims 3.

NVidia Drivers 191.07 - Crash to Desktop

I've been trying for the last few days to find out why my game keeps crashing to the desktop, for the most part it is random, but ANY time I try to save the game, it crashes to desktop. I did try to uninstall the driver and reinstall the 190.62 on my GeForce 8500 GT, but it's still having the exact same problem. It was letting me save for a while yesterday, and now it hasn't since my last save point.

I'm starting to agree with ridBonnie though... Maybe it has to do with the driver or the NVIDIA cards, but really, it's probably a game issue, since the suggested fixes are NOT working! I'm not trying to point fingers or anything, I just want to play my game.

It seems like this problem has been going on for a while, and there needs to be a real fix for this ASAP.

I was having the same crash issues after installing the 195.62 patch as well. After I read the notice posted on the forum that said to bypass the game launcher as a workaround, the game has not crashed on me since. Go to your program files where the game is saved and find the exe file (Sims 3 folder for base game, World Adventures for those with expansion -called TS3EP01)that actually launches the game itself and NOT the launcher. In face, just place a shortcut to the exe on your desktop so you don't always have to dig through your game files. If you run the game from the launcher, your pc will blue screen. If launching the game without the launcher still causes problems, then I have no suggestions.
