I love that you can go further in the career tracks without having to have everything completely maxed out. My Sim went to a police conference and get out of having to write more reports. Actually if you just keep cancelling the "get out of pool" action or build walls around the pool (haven't tested this myself) they can still drown.

You can still earn raises at work even if you're at the top of the career ladder?

Journalist Sims that have reached a certain point in the career ladder will gain a new action to "dig up dirt" on their fellow Sims. They can actually dig through neighbors' trash cans and then write either negative or positive articles about that Sim. Alternatively, they can simply interview other Sims once their relationship is high enough.

The laptop is portable? No need for a desk at home, just head to the park and find a table.

This last one isn't a did you know, but it is a curiosity.

(This ones an advisory) Be careful about queuing any actions up when your sim is in the carpool on the way home from work - it will cancel the carpool and the sim will get in a Taxi.

I love the ability to 'Overclock' the computer - I had my sim do it and the message I got was 'Well, it isn't any faster but it seems sturdier and thats good right?'

Just look around on the ground in any location and you can find little things crawling around. Click on them and choose "catch". If you do it near a dumpster you will get cockroaches . HAHA! i threw a party when my sims home barely had any furniture in it and the guests brought so much food that i had food all over the house because they ran out of room to put the food on counters or tables so there were on the floor in the bathroom, rooms, livingroom! it was insane, my sim had to clean for hours! -Although some of the "rewards" options from Sims 2 may be gone, you can get a few similar effects through other ways, like gardening - you can grow Life Fruit that reduces your current lifespan by a day, or Money Trees that grow bags of money every few days. (Both come from "Special" seeds, which I believe take level 7 gardening to grow, just like rare plants.) There's also a death flower of some sort, but I'm not sure yet just what it does - you can actually harvest one from the graveyard in Riverside, and plant the flower in your own garden. Once you harvest the plant once it dies, but with a high enough gardening skill, you can then revive it.

-Sims with a green thumb can "talk to plants" in their garden to socialize. Not sure if this has any positive improvement on the plants yet. (At least, I'm pretty sure it's the green thumb trait that does it.)

-For some of the icons on the top left of the screen, there is a tab on the right side that you can grab with the mouse and pull out to change how long you're doing something. Like if you're fishing, the default is to fish indefinitely, but you can pull out the tab for different options... like to fish until you catch 5 fish, or fish until you gain a skill point. (This might seem obvious, but it took me a good while to twig onto it. XD )

-You can buy a fishbowl to keep fish as pets (I think only one fish per bowl though). It's under miscellaneous decor in some category, but I forget which offhand. I noticed that when a sim wants to sit on the couch, they can do it with a baby in their arms, instead of leaving it on the floor or putting it back in the crib.

If you buy a rubber ducky at the grocery store, the sims will play with it when they take a bath =)

If you have a private wedding MAKE SURE YOUR SIM IS WEARING THEIR OUTFIT FIRST!!! They won't jump into their formal outfits, they'll just get married in their everyday wear.

If your sim hasn't been working out, they have a hard time (I'm guessing this because my sim had an extremely hard time opening the dresser drawer, lol)

Sims get the moodlet "Pristine Picture" when they watch television on the big screen tv's.

Maybe this one is a slight glitch, but- When sims "Try for Baby" sometimes the Rock-a-By baby theme plays. Mine didn't once so I thought it didn't work, but my sim threw up anyways so I knew it worked then.

So far I've noticed that you don't have to take care of the flowers or shrubs outside (yay!)

No more glaring red Environment bar, only red moodlets that disappear after awhile.

When you move objects like a table or a desk, it moves everything, chair and all.

For gardening you must buy a gardening volume, they only let you read what your skill level says you can read. (I didn't know you had to buy a book for gardening, I figured it would be like the Sims 2 and you could just do it).

The coffee maker makes tons of flavored coffees.

You can move the mailbox and outside trash can without putting in a cheat first.

Your sims have the option "Woohoo" after they makeout, they don't need to be sitting on the bed first, they go to the bed by themselves.

I love that the lights can be set to dim, normal, or bright.

The counters don't need to be cleaned after every prepared meal, and the sims pick up their appliances and clean underneath them.

Something little but I like it: Your sims look behind them and back up when they teach their toddlers how to walk =)

Instead of bringing friends home from school without asking, there is now a pop-up that asks if its ok for them to go to their friends house.

Sims can have more quick meals, which means they come right out of the fridge--I got so tired of waiting for my sim to prepare cereal.

Your sims can get manicures, lol.

The mailbox and trash can, are movable but cannot be sold or placed in inventory. I noticed that when you create a new family, it will give you a difficulty rating. I'm not sure what it's based on (traits, etc) but a single adult gave me one bar of difficulty, and a family with 2 parents, 2 teenagers, and a child gave me 4/5 bars.

Quick meals are fantastic.

If you have the cheap shower, your sim will get a negative moodlet because the water was cold! Same with the stove--sometimes you'll get one that says the food was cooked unevenly.

And can I just say HOW ABSOLUTELY FRICKIN AMAZING it feels to be able to place things DIAGONALLY! I put my microwave on the corner counter and almost **** a brick. I also love that sims put dirty dishes on the same square. They pile up. WAY more realistic!

I also love how you can see how far into a painting or novel you are by the action bar. 1.Sims can get drunk,throw up,and visitors can even fall asleep at your house.

2.If there is a police officer living in the house,and a teen sim from the same house is out breaking curfew,the police officer(dad or mom,etc) might get a call at 1 a.m. to go pick this kid up.(Learned that one the hard way.Made my sim mad for getting up at 1 am).

3.You cant watch tv and eat at the same time.=(

4.Your sims will now sometimes store leftovers in the fridge to be eaten later.

5.As your sim gets higher in his/her career there will be more options while at work.(e.i.In the police career your sim will be allowed to chat with their partner while working.As you get higher,you can use the workout center in the station during your shift.)

6.You can train other sims if you are athletic or have a high athletic level(about 5 or so).


And lastly.This isnt exactly a did you know.But a story that will tell some cool facts.

may be kind impossible to form the relationship since young adults can't be children of adults or siblings of teens, but if you pick different ages I'd say your best bet would be to create the whole family, YA included, move them in, then have the YA move out and then switch to play the YA in edit town instead of the family

Another thing I found interesting is that certain places stay open late, and some do not. Like I was able to go to the library at 1:00 AM and out to eat, but when I tried to go to the bistro they told me the store was closed.

OH, I just thought of another one.. One thing I like is that when you are trying to find a sim at their house and they're not there if you hover over the house they will tell them where you can find them. When you put chairs around the dining room table, they automatically face the right direction. If you want to move the table and the chairs, just move the table! The chairs will go with them!

If you tell your Sim to take a shower and then go to bed, instead of dressing in their everyday clothes, then walking into the bedroom and changing into sleepwear, they change into their jammies when they get out of the shower.

If you click on a neighbors house, but the option to visit is greyed out, click it anyway...it will tell you where the sim is. Makes it very easy to find sims you are trying to build relationships with!

Unlike TS2, you CAN put leftover pizza in the fridge to eat as leftovers later!! I have one Sim that is probably going to be LIVING off of Pizza!

My sim has the childish trait, but not the virtuous one and sings all the time in the shower.
Also, they used to sing in the shower in the sims 1, I'm sure. But I'm not sure if they did in the sims 2.

Another thing I found was my sim has the loner trait, but she still got the negative moodlet "Stir Crazy" from being on her home lot too long which I thought was a little strange. xD

That to save camera angles you have to start from Ctrl + 5 because 4 speeds the game up, I reckon some of my fellow machinima makers have been screwing over getting used to that one.

-Several times I've caught the same maid getting cereal out of my fridge and eating it, then she suddenly looks around and takes off running. The third time she did it, I went into the room and used the "Stop doing that." command and she hasn't done it since. LOL! The first time I saw this I started cracking up!!

-My sim was getting tired and I tried to give her some coffee to raise her energy level (like in Sims 2) but her energy didn't go up. By now her energy bar was completely red and when I tried to tell her to go to bed, it said she couldn't possibly sleep with that much of a buzz! Thankfully it wore off just in time but the buzz lasted a while.

-If your sim is in town and is starting to really need things, instead of going from place to place to try and fulfill them go to the spa. I got my sim the $3000 package and all of her needs completely filled up except energy and that one filled 1/2 way up. I'm not sure which treatments will do all this but I know at least the $3000 package does.

Well I'm off to play and try out some of these great ideas!! The tiny water drops coming from a broken sink/shower/bathtub are actually 3D drops that distort light like a real water drop does? (I know, it's an incredibly minor detail, I just like it.)

Some times you call a pizza delivery, maybe in a party.
Somebody picked a slice but for some reasons he canceled the action, maybe when the dude blows out the candles.
The guy with the pizza will put it at the floor.
Then, after the party, you try to clean things up, and you spot the pizza.
As it's still in nice condition, you decide to put it away as leftovers.
You pick it up and head straight to the fridge.
You can put it in but it simply goes straight into your inventory.
Well, ok, time to sleep, and few hours later, it prompts you that your sim is disgusted by the pizza.
Alright, you can't clean it up, trash it or drag it out. The only option is to eat it.

I've had this problem too. When I click on the car and say "go to work", sometimes she will take her bike, or jog instead of taking the car ? I mean, I'm all for "going green" and all but if I say take the car, take the car!! Then sometimes she will still take the carpool even though she owns a car

I made a Never Nude Sim and she showers with her bathing suit on. Expected, but pretty funny. Also she is a miserable failure when she tries to flirt. The guy always says she's making him feel awkward. And he actually looks awkward, he puts his hands behind his back, avoids eye contact and looks around for an escape route

A Flirty Sim saw a girl he liked, stopped in his tracks and went "OoOooohh! Hmmmm..." and went over to talk to her sort of strutting.

If you go to the park you can just eat off of anybody's picnic blanket for free! I kept waiting to get yelled at for this by some Sim but not yet.

One of my "did you know" moments is that the Prima Guide is TRULY helpful! I've had to do a little searching at times but it's answered most of my pressing questions. I bought it on a whim and then almost immediately regretted it but after skimming through it, even my console-game-addict husband agreed that it's one of most comprehensive guides he's seen. I'm so glad I bought it!

Oh! I've got another one. Kick Out a sim and he'll move to a new empty house in the 'hood...but not nessecarily one he can afford (i kicked a guy out...he had nothing...he moved into one of the bigger homes in the neighborhood)
Your sims need to at least know people in the 'hood and get along with them (more than just one person too) to stay

Epic life span slows everything down....they have more time to do the things they want to do so they arent in a rush to get things done in the 28 days of their adult life or 15 young adult or what ever it is...I have a young adult who still has 165 days of young adulthood left...plenty of time to get stuff done...
It does seem that on epic there is less of the immaculate conception thing going on...they have time...and they seem to know this...at least from my observation at this point.

you can knock on a neighbors door and if they are home they may invite you in...if you behave "inappropriately" you will get a warning...if you continue to do the behavior they will ask you to leave.

You can choose a neighbor to visit from the map screen

For 4000 simoleons you can take a class in each skill in about 2- 3 sim days...then you at least have one point in each skill which then allows you to watch TV (fishing channel, garden, and cooking) to gain skill

If you place paintings your sim has painted into their inventory and than take them to the Art Gallery, you can place their paintings on the wall. As time goes by, their value will go up and if your sim dies they almost double in value and than their family members can sell them off.

If you hold down the "Alt" key and your left mouse while an object is selected you can spin the object at super fine degrees instead of the basic 45° that the game normally allows. This allows you to really place your objects and have them face the way you want them to.

Anyway, a couple more:

-When you have maid service, along with cleaning up your house, they'll also put any non-spoiled uneaten food in the fridge as leftovers.

-Quality of service varies. Maids and babysitters might ignore the job they're supposed to do sometimes, and sit around doing their own thing. Others might do the job really well. It seems to vary, as best I can tell. Which is cool and funny.

-You can save camera angles (which I found out after another thread about things I wanted to see in a patch), by pressing the CTRL key along with the number 5-9, then bring back the saved positions by pressing Shift 5-9. This not only saves the camera angle and all, it also repositions to it to the place in the neighborhood where you saved it - so you can basically use this as a shortcut to go between your most frequently viewed places. (It even works from the map screen, zooming you back in to the normal screen automatically.)

When my sim was overly tired and late going to bed, I made her take a bath first, so she would have more sleep time in AM. She kept dozing off in the tub and jerking awake, going "oh... oh!"

I ran into my boss in the park, who is a friend. While we were talking I got an option to "ask for promotion" and "ask for raise". Didn't get either one, but worth a try and interesting they were options.

If you have a sim who is a writer, it's not necessary to rummage in garbage and all that to get scoops. It IS good to do all the interviews you can while you are a reporter, because they are practically instant friends at the end, so if you need friends quick, that's one way.

Writers make tons of money on royalties. Before she even got a job, my sim was making over 8000 simoleons a week in royalties.

Buying a partnership in a business is also a good deal. My sim bought a partnership in the grocery store and gets 2000 simoleons a week. She just bought partnerships in the bistro and theatre, so I'll be interested to see if those pay as much.

Did you know...?

When you are done painting you cane name your painting. And if you choose to hang it on the wall if you click it you can frame it so it looks nice. I like it cause it doesnt look like cheap posters all over my wall. Also that if you are a painter, when you click on your celly you get an additional interaction which is "memorize" or something like that which is like taking pictures on your phone but the difference is when you go back to paint on your canvas you can then click on paint memory or something and paint the picture you took with the celly.

I love the fact that if you high enough repair skills you can tinker your stereo to play throughout all the rooms.

I like that if you want you don't necessarily have to click on the phone to throw a birthday party. You can just click blow out candles on the cake and they make an announcement and people who are close to the area will just show up lol.

Your Sim is still at the lowest career level. She will have to get a few promotions to become a reporter. Then you will get the option to interview under "special".

You should get your writing skill up as quickly as possible, if you haven't already. Buy her a computer and take the class. Then do several sessions of "improve writing skill" on the computer. At each level you should see where you can write different types of literature, starting, I think, with "trashy novel". While your writing books your skill will improve also. Each time you complete a book it will tell you how much you get in royalties for each one. Eventually you can write dramas, mysteries, romance, etc. and get paid.

Be sure to spend time doing interviews and doing articles (positive) on the people you interview. It gives you a list of people you've talked to that willlast only about a week. (You can't "interview" friends.) Also write regular articles so you get royalties and good reviews. You have to do both the people type interviews and the regular articles. Also watch the stadium concerts and games to review.

The royalties increase with the type of literature. Romance paying the most. The diary you can open to the right of where it shows how many bubbles of skill you have tells you and also gives you all your stats about earnings and stuff. Be sure to scroll down.

The "ask for promotion", etc., isn't an Ambition thing. Must be something else, because my Sim doesn't have that trait. It may have to do with meeting your boss in a social setting and how good the relationship is. My Sim is Best Friends with her boss. Hard to say.

When you get the notice that the baby is coming click on your pregnant sim, the command will say "Go to Hospital", she will drive her own car. It's great! One thing I found out about this is they get a "buzz" and then a "buzz drop" from that stuff. LOL!

There are decor items that only show up under the "All" decor tab. I also tried the cheat code: testingCheatsenabled true. This works great! Ane after you have chosen a sim to do whatever, you can hold the shift key and left click anywhere and you can teleport them; I know, and they get around much faster, I even have them teleport across the city and back, and the only way I found this out was that my one sim found a meteor while looking into the telescope, so she teleported across town, put that huge meteor into her inventory, then teleported back home

Burglars will try to steal your car, if you have a garage put an alarm in there also, it will stop him/her.

You can find/fish out mysterious Mr Gnome (not the same as the one you can get in buy mode) and when you place him in the house he will randomly move around and be in different positions. I found mine laying out by the pool.

Sims who are married or romantically involved with a high enough relationship will autonomously have romantic interactions.

I love that they remember which bed is theirs and will always go to it, unless someone else is in it. (I hated in TS2 when they would just go to the nearest bed)

One of my sims (hopelessly romantic, easily excitable bookworm) fell in love with her boss (after a long build up) - and when she asked him to go steady he agreed - but that's when she found out he had commitment issues. Which ****** ME off, since I'd spent so much time on them. So using Testingcheatsenabled I added him to the household and modified his traits - making him family oriented - and the first wish he got was to marry his girlfriend.

My insane Sim went down in the catacombs & came out looking like he'd been struck by lightening too. Also, when he talks to other sims he has some weird options like "share conspiracy theories".

I really like how Sims will now autonomously build skills. True, before Sims would do things for entertainment purposes that also built skills - like painting or playing chess. But I had a Sim I wasn't watching closely relax on his bed and start reading the cooking skill book. And he's not even a cook or have the natural cook trait. Granted, he is insane. Yeah, if both Sims are on the lot you can even do it quicker - open the frugal sim's inventory, drag the coupon over to the second sim's face icon on the left of the screen, and drop it there. A legacy sim is a sim that you are using for the Legacy Challenge.

The Legacy Challenge is a fan based challenge created by Pinstar when TS2 was new.

The basic theory is make one sim, move them in to the biggest empty lot you can find, and play the family for 10 generations. The trick is you can't use cheat codes and your "heir" for the next generation has to be born by blood. (blood relation that is. No adopted children can be heir.) You also can only marry townie or service sims.

Pinstar is making a new set of rules for TS3 for the people who need rules and scoring. I played the Legacy challenge loosely and only got to Gen 4. life fruit can bee grown by master guardeners the sees can be found around the map on grassy planes. you have to buy cheese.

kleptomaniacs bring hoome cool stuff(in family inventory buy mode)

nerotic sims can freakout to remove stressed out. they also have to check stove/faucets...however they seem to break less.

computer whiz can hack for moneybut only at night. clean house is a neat only thing just like talking to plants os only green thumb.

in the library you can read skill books free.

you can skip work and not lose your job if you work double hard on days you go.

I have a guitar for dad who finally maxed it out. His son picked it up to play and put it in his inventory when he was done!

I looked all over the house for that darn thing before I found it. He is absentminded so that might be it. Dad never put it in his inventory.

For cheese, you have to have a certain opportunity, and once you complete it, you'll be able to grow it. (I suspect you need a high level of gardening to get it.)

I've read all 31 pages (over 3 days) and laughed till I cried.

About the catacombs; I had a sim go in and come out with spiked hair, only, he was bald going in.

A child who has some skill (I think 4 points) in logic can invite a ranked chessplayer with his/her phone but can't actually challenge them.
They play together but it doesn't register as a ranked match.
Poor kid had to wait to be a teen to have that wish come true.

Love that ingredients don't spoil in your inventory, hate that they stack up different qualities together.

The insect containers stack up upto 3.

Can you starve a sim thats not part of your family? I had one trapped with no doors but 4 days later I lured her into a pool because she wasn't starving. My own sims need at least 2 meals a day (she had to die cos my sims wanted to see her ghost and then I found out she wasn't dead yet)

The action to get a sim to fall asleep from boredom is called "Bore to death", glad it isn't that literal.

Neat sims clean stuff 'till pristine' not sure if it looks any cleaner but in one house I had them all do their own thing and when the once white toilet was almost black one sim cleaned it a bit, I guess "to pristine" means totally...

I threw a wedding party but I forgot to get married and I got a 2 day bad moodlet for not being on time to my own wedding, wich incidentally I threw on the beach and I WAS there and so was my fiancee. When I got home the baby had a good moodlet for an awesome party

Actually, my sim's baby daughter lives next door and he goes over to snuggle her every day. When they are toddlers you can actually bring the toddler home and potty train them in your house (I posted this somewhere around page 12)

I just planted my first cheese plant and egg plant... we'll see what happens. I'm at gardening 9. I found out that you can plant the perfect quality death flower, only to end up with 1 perfect quality death flower (back where I began). Still haven't found the anti-aging seed or potion, but I did cultivate flame fruit.

Found a beetle worth over $1000 but I'm not sure if I want to donate it or save later for a collection.

Can't quote both posts Rose but AWESOME answers thanks SO much, completely helped and I'm having a blast!. I'm playing that crazy family and it's a very fun challenge because she's got SO much going against her - but in TS2, without cheating at ALL, things had gotten to a point where things were SO easy. I'm LOVING this game - though I'm still QUITE bummed about the the game COMPLETELY screwing up families that you're no longer playing. I can see life going on but I wish they would have lowered the threshold quite a bit for the changes that can occour. More than welcome. One thing I did find out. You CAN interview your friends. Sometimes it doesn't give me that option, but I have been able to go back and interview several. I've been loving it, too.

Agree with you on the family issues. Supposedly the control to stop the game progression was going to take care of that, but it doesn't seem to work. My poor Writer Sim worked her way all the way up to Star News Anchor, but when she moved in with her boyfriend, it knocked her back several levels. She still has her Lifetime Wish Fulfillment, but she has to go back again on her levels. Also, when she moved, her money didn't seem to move with her. That annoyed me. They would have had a pile of money between them. Oh, well.

One thing that took me a while to figure out with him. He can/should do concerts regularly at different venues. He can play at the stadium and at the theatre in town. The stadium pays a lot more, of course. Someone else mentioned the awesome sound effects. You can actually listen to the concerts if zoom into the buildings. Love that touch.

Lots of things I miss from Sims2, but the more I play this game, the more I like it. Lots of fun stuff!!!

Well, she just had twins, and the old guy is STILL alive - and 92 days old! I double checked my options to make sure I hadn't inadvertently changed the lifetime, but I hadn't! The options menu still says "90 days". So I guess that's more of a guideline, or since I created him myself maybe there's an internal error that's judging his lifetime from creation not from what the cronominor says...I don't know. But I'm super ready for him to be a crazy old ghost.

The eating three apples seems to have worked (doubly so) on my sim.

Also, the interview option that police have (for writing their reports) is a great way to find out all of another sim's traits - but if you don't want to make them mad, it's good to start with a little conversation and maybe a joke or two.

Like a workaholic starts out with work indefinately but if you stretch it out you have options of working for 4 hrs or 2 on the computer.

Fishing has options of fishing til skill up or catching so many fish.

There may be alot more but start started messing with this.

Also for the one that asked about taking someone to dinner. I had the hardest trouble with this as my boss wanted me to fill in for her, apparently I had to socialize with them a bit to get them to go with me. It may work quicker if can get them to come over but I never could.

Just be careful, I had the opportunity reward to plant the egg and cheese plant, and did so... but then I switched briefly to another active sim for a couple days, and back.. and now I can no longer plant them. I don't know if it times out, or if opportunity rewards disappear as well when you change active Sims. But it stinks. :/ Especially since my egg plant went barren, and now I'll actually have to *gasp* buy eggs at the supermarket or through the fridge. :/

About the Death Flower - you might need a certain level of Gardening skill, but after you collect the Flower, you should have the option to revive the plant (as long as it's on your own lot at least). This doesn't *always* work, but it works enough of the time that you should slowly but steadily begin to collect extra Death Flowers.

As for the life thing.... You can't change lifetime wish if you already completed it. I've tried.

Sims with Handy trait idly plays with a spanner.
Sims with Evil trait laughs evilly when idle
Sims with Excitable randomly laughs at mundane things when idle, with boosting moodlets.

You can change the doorbell tone by upgrading it. Check your front door.

You can build sprinklers, its in the outdoors tab, bit hard to find.

You can dup the death flower without omniplants, by using the revive skill on the plant. This skill is only from characters with Green Thumb. Not sure if getting the Super Green Thumb gives it.

Death flowers provide an extra life when a sim dies.

Also, went over to the rich neighbors who just had a new baby - and the baby was on the floor, and there was no crib anywhere for the child. I know - I had my sim change it, feed it, cuddle it & play with it - then look around for a crib to put it in, but there wasn't one. This happened with my laptop. Whilst repairing, I borked it, set it and myself on fire and then after all the commotion, I replaced it through the insurance option but even then my Sim did not want to use or go near it untill in the end I had to sell the laptop and buy a new one?!

I read in the guide that the way to drown a sim is to have them swim while fatigued.
