[u]Here's why I'd like to still have a thread for photos:[/u]
1. It's a great way to advertise the AWESOME work our talented builders are doing.
2. Some of the newer people may not know how to use an outside photo site.
3. Some people may not want to create another account on another site.
4. Some forum members may not want to bother with the time of linking to another site.

You may post your pics to this separate thread, or you may use an outside site if you prefer. Finally, you may link to a story here on The Sims site. It works pretty much the same as any other link, so I figured why not.

Once people are more experienced, we may chop these options down a bit. The vote on the Builders' Boulevard site was an outside source (ie. Photo Bucket or Image Shack), but there was scattered interest all over the board.

I'm just going to give instructions for a basic, foundation-only basement. In a starter, you probably won't have much money for one with walls anyway. Below my post is the way to make a basement that will allow you to include walls, too. It's a great tutorial. Thanks, Bonafied, for the link!

1. Using the foundation tool, build the foundation for your home. Keep in mind that your basement will be one square smaller on all sides than the foundation of your home.

2. Again using the foundation tool, hold down ctrl and create a hole in your foundation. Leave at least 1 square width on all sides. This will allow you to carve it out while maintaining a visible foundation for your home and walls for the basement.

3. Using the terrain tool, select the one for lowering. The new square option is very helpful, I think. Lower the ground in the new hole you created. Make sure you go at least far enough that there's "headroom" for your sims when they go downstairs and walk around. If there's not enough room, it won't let you place the stairs. So if you get them to work, you should be good. Conversely, don't dig too far down, or the drop will be too steep and the stairs won't make it to the bottom in a small floorplan like a starter.

4. Once you've confirmed there's room from that point to place the stairs, level the foundation to that level. You can find the level tool in the terrain section. You'll see a green square when you have the tool on. Click and drag it to the edges of your foundation walls that form your basement. Repeat until the basement floor is totally flat.

5. Place your stairs by clicking on the foundation edge or a floor tile. I recommend being at least one floor tile away from the outside edge of the foundation wall because it just gives a little more space for playability (in other words, I like a landing that's at least two blocks away from the wall). Hope that makes sense. Ask me if it doesn't.

6. Add flooring, wall coverings (if you have money), and objects.

7. On the first floor, you should be able to cover the whole floor with tile except the ones just above the stairs. I usually build a wall or fence around this hole so the sims don't "fall."

8. It's basic, but it works.

[size=18][b][u]Carports[/u][/b][/size]
I'm going to include instructions for building a carport that is attached to your home that has foundation (I'm thinking people will need this if they're building a basement.) If you're not building a house with foundation, basically just skip the first step.

1. Build a foundation next to your house and make it the size you want for your carport with roof overhang. I would recommend at least 7 tiles wide (A car is three tiles wide, so this will give you a free row of ground on each side and then another row on each side for foundation.

2. Enclose the three open sides of the carport with walls (the other side should be your house and should already have a wall).

3. Decide what type of roof you want and apply it. If you have a one-floor home, your roof could extend to include the carport. If it's two stories, you could still have a traditional roof. You could also try a flat roof if you like that best. [u]After this, turn off autoroof. It's just to the left of the roofing options. It will get rid of the roof in the next step if you don't do this step.[/u]

4. Delete the walls from the carport area (but not the wall that is part of the house.)

5. Delete the foundation from the center five tiles (three in the middle for the parking space and car, one on each side for a little area to walk.) You can use the foundation tool to do this by clicking on the foundation and holding ctrl.

6. You can either leave the foundation as a strip on each side of the carport, or you might just want to leave a square of foundation at each corner. Either way, I would put a column or some system of visual support at each corner to "hold up the roof." Remember that you can use patio foundation if you're low on money. Drag over the regular foundation square with the patio tool to create the first level. Click shift and drag over it again to get the "column" of patio that now supports your carport roof.

7. To create an entry to the house (per Cody's request), place a door on the house wall. This will create a floating piece of wood tile on the side of the wall facing/under your carport.

8. Place a piece of foundation where the door is and extend it one more foundation square against the carport wall.

9. Attach stairs to run along the wall. (You could build them straight out, but this will leave less room to walk around the car.)

[b][size=18]A few tips for starters[/size][/b]
Here are just a few tips to get you started. If you know a few more and are willing to give them up to the competition , feel free to post below with more info!

[u]Walls:[/u]
Are expensive. Use alternatives whenever possible.

Open layouts work nicely for starters. Just use natural transitioning and create "areas" instead (ie. the kitchen opens onto the living room, instead of being its own little room.)

Simple foundation basements are nice because they are made out of foundation, which is cheaper, and they add a whole lot of room to your house. If you leave them bare with brick walls, they cost even less. (I would at least cover the floor, though.) Attics can be good for the same reason. If you use a pointy roof and the house is big enough, there is some area under the highest point of the roof that's usable. All it costs to utilize this space is a set of the cheapest stairs and some inexpensive flooring.

Diagonal walls can be a little awkward, but because they can go from corner to corner and are wider than regular walls, you get a "room" out of one wall.

[u]Foundation:[/u]
Whether you are going to use a basement or not, hollow out the middle of your foundation floors. You really only need foundation around the outer edge of your home so your walls aren't floating in outerspace. When you use ctrl with the foundation tool, it erases foundation. If the area is still closed in with walls and a border of foundation, you usually are left with a floating floor. If the tile grid "disappears," start from the outside and work your way in. Each new row of floor will add the grid for the row after it. Soon, the whole room is covered.

Deleting the foundation has a second advantage: you can create little sunk-in areas with a set of stairs. Kind of a fun design twist that's cheap.

[u]Columns:[/u]
Also expensive. You know that carport? Instead of columns, you might consider using a two-level patio foundation (the one with the wood slats). Build the patio foundation. Then, on top of that one, hit shift and drag another patio foundation. They stack and become taller. High enough for that carport roof.

You also don't "need" all the columns. If you're trying to get flooring above a column, use the column, add the floor, and then delete the column. Voila! Floating tiles. I wouldn't have a massive floating object with no columns, but a few less than you need helps pinch pennies when you're talking starter.

[u]Wall coverings:[/u]
This is something I've figured out in Sims 3. I probably shouldn't tell you if you haven't done it yet...[size=7]find the cheapest wall with no built-in pattern you can find (I use Flat Wall in the paint section). Click on it with the create-a-style tool. Go to your brick or whatever other more expensive pattern you want and select it. Your brick wall now costs about $3 less per panel then if you just did it the normal way.[/size]

[u]Floorplan:[/u]
Always go small. More walls=more money. They're expensive, and you have to cover them. Make it big enough that the sim can move around. But if they outgrow the house, they can always add on later. This is probably the biggest money-saver for starters.

[u]Windows:[/u]
Check window prices carefully. Some of the double windows will be cheaper than using two of the smaller ones. It's usually not by much, but if you're doing a whole wall of them, it can add up.

[u]Build and build again:[/u]
The cool thing about starters is you can build them pretty quickly. I usually find the more I build consecutively, the more I can get in and for less money.

Of course, not everyone knows HTML or has a photo-editing program like Paint Shop Pro or Photoshop in order to resize their photos. If there's a different way to do it, let people know.

In fact, some people may not know that above their box in the reply is how you change the size of your font.

NOW you know.

Me personally, I like posting thumbnails instead, even though I didn't do it with the first challenge. Granted, they may link to another site, but they get the point across. Though I just might try the story feature as well, it looks fun and I may get more hits.

Now all I have to do is put google on my website, and then maybe I can make some extra quarters. But that's a personal challenge.

What I do when I post images here, I have photoshop but it is so much easier (because I submit in multiple places) --

Check resize image when uploading and choose "640x480 (For Message Boards)", and I have never had a problem with the webpage tearing.

Good option for someone who doesn't have photo editing software, not much work involved at all!

Well, I'm not the best person to ask! Several other people posted thumbnails in the first Challenge thread.

However...with me....when I was uploading the screenshots to my website, I just clicked "Auto-Thumbnail" and it immediately created thumbnails. That was with Microsoft FrontPage. So in other words, house.jpg immediately became house_small.jpg or something like that.

Then by using the IMG tab above in the reply box, that's how I'd post the image on the photo thread. Example:

Although my problem is, heh, by using that particular picture, it only brings the small one up. No clicking, etc. Like I said, I'm not the best person to ask.

I still think I'm gonna try the story this time 'round though. Although Sinastra's option is awesome...and very user-friendly.

Addict, imageshack has a thumbnail option as well. Once you submit your image, it takes you to a page of links as well as boxes of code you can cut and paste to post thumnails to your site/board/etc.

Pretty much what Sinastra said.

Head on over to an image hosting site. One easy site to use is www.imageshack.us

Sign up for an account, and KEEP the email they send you with the registration link. You need to use this link to log in again if you ever log off your account.

Once you log in you just need to click 'browse', choose your files (my documents/electronic arts/the sims 3/screenshots) and click OK. Now CHECK the resize image box, and click on the dropdown menu to choose 640x480. Now you can click on Start Upload.

After they've been uploaded,uncheck 'Include Details', click on Hotlink for forums (1), copy the code and paste it in here.

If you had uploaded multiple files at once, you need to click on 'My Images' on the bar at the top of the page. Once you find the images you want, click on the little 'i' symbol on the right of each thumbnail, uncheck 'Include Details' then copy every thing in the 'Forums' code box, then paste it here.

It is a nice tutorial, though. I like that it includes the little stair shortcut for judging the depth of the basement. That's how I do it, too.

One thing though, as I read through your first post....I know for myself that the furniture depreciates the moment I go back into edit town. I built my first house the other day and was at 16k and some then I went into edit town and it came in under 16k!

That is the same way I created basements in Sims2, so I can tell you it works easily. Plus....there are no cheats involved...once you have 3 levels of stairs to get the correct height, you just use the level terrain tool to bring the floor level with the lowest level. Easy as pie. ( well..easier...pie can be hard)

Great post btw. Had some really useful information and tidbits. I'm going to assume by firm name you mean teh make believe one? Or is there some way to have an official firm name? Just thought I'd ask since I'm new to building in Sims 3. I've been working on my haunted house and your tips gave me some ideas and answers. Though I do have a burning question. How do you make diagonal flooring? I've tried building a wall and fence on top and then using the hammer but it deletes th whole square. I just thought I'd tryout teh challenge to give me more practice, though.

Hey Addict just to confirm a few things... an entry off the carport means that the front door is IN the carport or outside but very near to the carport?

By in the carport I mean the door to the house is somehow connected directly to one of the sides of the carport.

The basement thing. Definitely going to post that. I have no idea why I thought you would need to do the foundation thing and then the little stair trick. I think I thought you couldn't build a foundation next to a wall...that is much easier.

The art room. Preferably, his art area will have some nice light. But if you're cramped for space, you could stick it down there. I would actually consider moving some other aspect of the house to the basement. And you could always have an attic and a basement if you're crunched for space. I suggested them because they are cheap ways to add more space.

Hmm. What does it say when you click to put them there? If it says, "ceiling too low," you need to make the hole deeper. If it says, "can't place landing," it might be too deep. You also might need to get rid of any flooring you laid before placing the stairs. The only other thing I can think of is if there just aren't enough squares. I think you'd need at least 6 tiles wide to get a landing, top, and (I think it's 4) spaces for the stairs themselves. I'm not sure what else.

If you're not too far in, you might want to watch the youtube video posted in the basement section. To ensure you have the right height of a basement, you can use three little stairs and then delete them. This makes the basement the height of a wall and should ensure that your basement is deep enough.

Thanks, I am sure I will enjoy it. I love the design aspect of Sims just haven't played with it until now. It takes a lot of time and research to get to know how everything works and how to make the house look exactly like you invisioned.

I'm probably Intermediate (though this does not necessarily mean that I'm any good )

My builders firm is called [b]Fudge2Grid[/b] - they have a motto - they are known as '[i]the honest builders[/i]' (which again does not necessarily mean that they are any good)

I do have a question, probably a silly question - it's about the plot size & location - I notice that, in game, plot prices vary. So, the question is:

Should we be using the cheapest plot? Or does the price of the plot get removed when we upload the lot?

You do not have to include him in the build. He's just there if you want to use him for pictures. On the old site, I always thought it was fun when people showed us the fams we were creating for. I'm going to try to do that here as much as I can. I don't know if I'll ever require you to download anything. (I can think of maybe one or two that might benefit from this, but I will keep that to a minimum, if I use that set up at all.) You're always welcome to drop a rec, though.

Yep, you can still join! And absolutely use the smallest plot you can. I noticed the smallest ones I could find were the bistro and the spa. I saved them to a folder and then bulldozed them. You'll have to click the button to change them to residential, then you should be all set to build.

This house clocks in at just under $16k, but I was in and out of there a couple of times because my girlfriend wanted to play. In any case, I don't think it's unreasonable due to the house's phone boothesque bed- and bathrooms. Mr. Clepto is getting what he asked for, though- the basement is the size of the rest of the house altogether, and the living room contains a beautiful painter's nook.

The overall color scheme of the house is gray, Clepto's favorite color, with furniture in bright, playful colors, themed by room or function.

I must say that I am very jealous of all of you! I have been looking at your designs and they are amazing! I am really glad that I put myself in the beginner category!

One of my favorite things about Sims2 was being able to creat storylines for my Sims. When I didn't see the option of keeping photos in 3 I was a little sad. [i]**stay with me, I swear I have a point** [/i]Finally, I decided to actually try to upload photos and low and behold, it is really easy. Petunia Beans, owner and head designer for RottenBeans Design, might be one of my favorite characters so I decided to do a story with her centering around the challenges.

I tried to download Cody and he didn't work I think this is more my own tech problems than any residing in poor Mr. Klepto!

My point was that I have finished them and here they are!

In the meantime, spent exactly $15,999. Could've thrown one extra flower in there, but to me, it looked fine as it was. That was the second draft, since I wasn't too happy with my first house. This time, got rid of the foundation and saved a few extra bucks in order to buy more furniture.

I know with sims, some people are uploading multiple times and then checking the launcher for whichever pic looks the best. I don't know if lot pictures are as random, though, because lots don't have different expressions. lol

Ahh,
I can answer two of those. Before you get into the building side of things, I would recommend making a new copy of your town if you haven't already. In your game (the household you've been playing), go to the options menu at left (it's a circle with three dots) and select "save as." This will allow you to save your game with a different file name. That way, you won't have to mess with your sim at all when you specifically want to work on building. It will also free you up to move in Cody because you can move that sim out in the town where you want to do your building because he/she will be safe in the first copy of the town (I hope that makes sense. Let me know if not.)

To make the building, go to Edit Town once you're in your building game. From there, you can click on a lot the size you want (I'd recommend a really small one for a starter). If when you click on the lot it is community, to switch it to residential you can click on the button that is half bench and half house. Once it's the zoning you want, click the saw button to enter build mode. Once you're done building, go back to edit town from the options button at left and save. Don't forget to go back out and save or you will lose your work!

If you evict your sim from his/her lot (because again, he/she is safe in the regular town), then you should just be able to click on Cody in the sim bin and click on the lot where you want him to move in.

Hope that makes sense. Let me know if you can't get him into the lot. I haven't tried switching households yet so I'll try it out if we need to for helping you.

This one was pretty challenging to make The highest price I clocked it in at was $15,790. For some reason most of my money went into the building itself, leaving me too little for my liking for furnishings. Oh well, it was a good challenge though!

Having checked out the other pictures I really hesitated to enter this... umm perhaps I need to go down a few levels.

Had problems with the depreciation - it is difficult not to accidentally exit - or at least it is for me. I think I was near the £16,000 mark before I hit the wrong buttons.

I also found, when road testing, that I had installed the shower at an incorrect angle but didn't go back in again to correct it because this would result in a further depreciation of the furniture.

Would it be possible to change the depreciation rules? **

I find that I need to save regularly as my laptop has a tendency to overheat so that, if I join in a challenge requiring a large house or something complicated, it is likely that I will not be able to build it all in one session. Plus, I'd really like to roadtest before uploading - I'm not really the greatest of builders But I am hoping to learn ... I have a lot to learn lol.

I've just re-read the first two posts & see that you do not say that we cannot exit & go back in - just that we should be fair about it - ie no mansion starters. I think I like that it depreciates straight away - sort of gives the buyer of a fully furnished home a bonus. Must admit that in the Sims 2, when I played, I never bought a fully furnished home - just cashed in on the wants for toilets & fridges as an easy bonus to increasing their mood at the start of the game.

Presenting a modern starter home for the Sim with sticky fingers. The main level features one bedroom, one bath, and open plan living and kitchen. A deck off the main living area extends the living space to the outdoors. Attached carport makes it easy to duck inside on those rainy days (if we ever have any). A large basement provides two additional rooms to remodel for entertainment or hoarding of valuables. Decor is neutral walls and floors, with pops of color thoughout.

Landscaping is kept open, to give you time to stash your stuff if you see visitors coming. Raked sand around the back and sides lets you know you have peeping Toms.

Addict, just a note on this - I tried to stay away from items from the store, but the basement was begging for me to use the bare lightbulb fixture. I couldn't resist. See the pics for what it's SUPPOSED to look like. I just hope it doesn't sub something heinous or ridiculous for the space when you look at it!

I'm having a tough time with this...I have never tried to build something on a budget...well I have in real life but the Sims is completely different. The house I made is $200 over and I exited and reentered because I did not complete it. I may enter it anyway, doubt it will go far due to the budget but I'm tired of making so many! haha

First time entry so correct me if anything is wrong with this post. I admit I exited to town twice(once on accident ) but the total before I exited the first time was $16,700, It is at $15,435 So I left it $600 under the 16,000 to try to make up for deprecation.

It was a challenge to get it done under 16k but we managed. The lot came to 15,990 when I left. We gave him all the things he asked for. Keeping the walls and floors neutral, (except bathroom floor). I managed to make a little story for this weeks challenge, but had to upload it to my forum, the site here kept freezing up on me, and deleting my pictures.

Haha I apparently unjinxed myself name wise because I came up with one! [i]Picturesque Architecture & Landscaping[/i], aka PAL. I picked that because it made me laugh, hehe.

I have built things many a time before. I've been playing sims since the original and I only played back then because I loved building the houses. But you won't get any glorious mansions or castles, etc. And I'm still working out all the building tools for sims 3, I've only tried to build one house so I don't know if there are many differences in tools and things.

I'll try to get a lot in for this week's challenge, summer vacation leaves me with lots of free time.

Well I couldn't resist and I did it, after not bothering for week 1, I did a week 2! I even did it all in one go so it was definitely under 16k (by 2$ in the end!).

I'm not sure what skill I am, I've made a few houses but not really with the tricks etc, had to use tutorials for basement and carport.

I really really hope I haven't gone over the 16,000 price mark hehe... I've gone back to basics... um no garden, no lights, NADA but it has got some furnishings hehehe

This house probably isn't suited for a starter home since the design was just too expensive I suppose, and it reeeally isn't complete... I've tried to follow most of the guidelines, but I just can't play around with it anymore, it's taken me forever ^_^

haha yeah, I forgot to mention that part too :p

Even a cardboard box has more light in it than my house!

but thank you I followed the youtube tutorials for the garage part and I did try and play a sim in it and it seemed to work fine, they said in the tutorials that lights in basements etc don't work unless you have an outer wall surrounding it.

photomunke - I tried doing a self-sim, it is sooooo hard! I can't wait to see your new one!

Anjubee, There are come cool concepts in that house. The porch off the attic and stairs leading from the inside to the carport downstairs, and the carport under the center of the house is a cool idea in itself. The fact you kept it under 16k is suprisisng. Thats some nice architecture for that pricerange.

I did accidentally go out of the town once -shame- but only once, and I didn't take the price all the way to 16000 because of it, LOL I tried to leave a bit extra to compensate for the depreciation.

Cody has a full basement, complete with a place to lay his "aquired" pretties, and a place to chill and watch TV. Along with a kitchen and dinette, his house comes with a detached carport, a lovely bedroom and bath. He will find the painting area pulls in light about 3/4 of the day, the rest there is a light above his head to work with. This lot does contain the cherry tree that I put in every lot now. ^_^

If this continues to be a very popular thread you might consider asking EA for a sticky tag...As far as judging this many lots, maybe bringing in another person or two to help judge would make things alot easier on yourself if this competition continues to grow.

Also, my house had some walls blocking some items (I forgot to test the house because I was afraid of depriciation) so should I upload a third revised version of the house or just keep the lot I already have up?

Well I dont know how long I will be playing this game every day(probably at least a month or two), but at least for the near future I can help with whatever Judging/Organizing you need help with.

I think your idea of having different judges for different categories would be the best way to stop biased judging. A standard Form form for entry would probably make thing alot easier as well; no missing links or skill levels for Addict to try and ask people for.

Yes, I was thinking of revising the rules for entry this coming week to make things a little more specific, as we are gaining quite a few people along the way.

I had thought about either judges or just starting to judge by pictures, and then checking out the top 5 or so builds (based on the pics I see) in each category to rank them. I can't decide if I would want to rotate judges or have a consistent set to make things a bit easier. I guess we'll see what kind of interest is out there.

I will keep your name in mind, shadow. Is there a particular level you'd be most interested in judging (other than the one you're in, obviously)?

It was harder then expected to stay under the cost limit of $16.000, but I pulled it off. I have the carport with an entrance to the house as sort of back entrance. All walls have neutral tones of gray as asked and because his favorite color is gray. It's furnished with bright color accents. The second floor is used for painting where there is a lot of light and also for storage space. The second floor is like an attic. The exterior is also in grays because of Cody's favorite color. I didn't got any money left to do any landscaping, but I think that's not a real issue for a starter home.

Unless a something big happens (I more from this small town again) I will help judging. I think the picture idea is good except some people can't take pics too well also some things in sims 3 don't read well through pictures (my carport in Cody's house) But it will narrow the load some.

I like the different Levels having different judges. You could try to get one from each level of skill and shift them to judge from the level below them. You would have to take the highest skill tho.

Judging the level below could work. I feel like I'm getting off easy, then. Advanced is the smallest.

Yes, I think a live judge is better than just from pics. I was thinking the pics thing might have to happen when I go back to work in the fall, but maybe with help, that wouldn't have to be the case.

We could try it next week and see how it goes. Are the two of you willing to write some quick comments like I did for last week's post? I do like to give some positive feedback to everyone because they're taking their personal time to enter.

I could take Advanced and Beginner. Nevar, I would give you intermediate then. Shadow, how would you feel about Brand-spankin' new? I'm a little concerned that you don't know how long you'll be involved. I think I would like to try for some consistency, at least at first when we need to develop a base. What do you think? Should we try it next week?

We can definitely get a list. I have one I've been adding to that's on my computer. I can upload it as a file to Yahoo! to share it. My latest typed one is now quite old, as it is from the end of Challenge 1. I will update it before Wednesday's new challenge with all the adds from this week so it will be the most current version possible before new builds start coming in. The one at the start of the challenge post is actually fairly accurate except for possibly a few adds from last night and those added today.

While a panel of judges would be good for more opinions, organzing it is a bit difficult logistically. I like to get results out fast, and generally, the more eyes need to see something, the slower it goes. I will be creating a checklist of things to consider for any judges. Additionally, if there seems to be a problem of favoritism, I will fix it quick. I can't decide yet if I'll rotate judges from week to week. That would create more styles/sensibilities sharing the load, but it might lead to inconsistency/more confusion. We're probably going to have to feel things out a bit. Even the Sims 2 challenges I was involved in way back when were not this big when I was in them. Both of the ones I was in before I created my own used just two people as the judges/hosts. It will probably take a few weeks, but we will get things figured out. I considered having votes on the Yahoo! group, but that all too often becomes a popularity contest in my opinion.

I'm Willing to judge the Brank Spankin new, Even if I dont play the game daily (which I'll probably will for a while) I'll be able to judge my category once a week. Its not like I wont be on the computer, I'll just be playing Call of Duty World at War.

Even if I dont find time to make my own entry I'd find time to judge my category. Right now though, I'm having alot of fun with this game and specially this Building challenge. I probably will be involved for quite a while, if you'll have me.

It doesnt take too long to build a house, post, then check forums a couple times a day.

CoD makes me mad anyway so I'll need a break (haha) but I probably shouldn't have said anything about leaving because its really unlikely.

you asked my level - i think i may be intermediate. i'm not very good and continue to learn but i used to enter some of the comps on the sims 2 as bungabooz builders.

please excuse lack of capitals. i choked on my coffee last night and sprayed over the laptop. fortunately it is still working, albeit with a lack of capital letters....oh i hope it dries out properly soon.

I used to build a lot, but that was over a year ago; I'd still like to compete at the advanced level. I didn't use the cheat window for this challenge.

I had to reenter the lot once, to check on the exchange picture. Since I was only starting then, the cost reduction was a little over §300.

My lots get dark exchange pictures when I upload them when it's dark in the game, maybe that's why the grass looks so dark?

This is a one-bedroom (including double bed), one-bathroom (with shower, not tub) Starter Home. A small Eat-In Kitchen and adjoining Living Room comprise the remainder of the rooms on level one. Up the stairs and we find a totally non-furnished "Attic" room. There is a door in the Attic leading to the fenced rooftop designated as "The Painting Deck". A carport adjoins the kitchen with a side door providing easy access when laden down with groceries. The main entry opens into the living room - and there is a "back door" leading off of the living room to the patio and large backyard.

Landscaping includes grass, flowers, shrubs, a tree and a few rocks- plus a lovely pond just in case one wanted to prepare one's own "fish and chips". And - the expanse of the backyard plus side and rear flat rooftops provide for eventual expansion of the home both outward and upward.

This home features many custom walls-floors and objects all recolors so there should not be a problem with the content showing up in the downloaded lot. And - later - after I edit the pictures - I will attempt to list the content and ensure I did upload all textures and "objects"

Can anyone tell me why EA chose to clump walls and floorings in with furniture and accessories?

Thanks for the info about PM (or lack thereof ), and yea im in the builders group so I'll just use that.

Anyway, I was trying to talk to you Addict; Just seems like it'd be easier to get this Challenge under control before it gets too big to implement any kind of structure. Not to mention it's already monday, and if you wanna use judges next week it may be best to get them all on the same page (i.e. criteria for judges, or standard forums for entry). I was thinking some kind of messenging service (aim, msn, myspace, or any chatroom for that matter) to throw ideas around quicker would be helpful in getting this competition smoothed out, not that it's rough to begin with.

Please don't take this post the wrong way, I'm not saying this competition is broke or somehow doomed. In fact, I'm saying the exact opposit, I can't get enough of it. Although just as you said yourself, it's growing faster than anyone expected. Getting some solid stucture in this challange while it's young, as well as being easier to change, should hopefully insure this competition is around to challenge and entertain Simmers for quite some time.

It's the first real home I build that I don't really plan to live in right after. I really liked it. I tried to make some exterior design, I've never done any. I find it quite sweet and next time I make a family, I might think of using it!

I made a custom roof to make everything fit. It's quite tricky actually but it ended up working.

I think everyone should check XFire out. http://www.xfire.com/

It's a chat program that can be toggled up from in-game. There's a system to take screenshots and upload them on their server. You can make guild (instead of a yahoo group). You can have a board with a calendar, guild screenshots, everything. When in a guild, everyone see when another is online (there's probably anonymous function). It's pretty easy to use.

The Sims 3 is the 10th game most played with XFire on right now with 10,732 users playing per day. Anyway, it'd be really cool since we could use normal and voice-chat and we could make a nifty community to share screenshots, videos and just talk to each others.

If someone else here has XFire and want to add me to their XFire list, search for BoomWav. I will be really glad.

XFire has a regular chat (that also work from in-game), a voice chat, a public/private clan page (including calendar, blog, forum, ...). The clan as a full roster so everyone can talk to anyone automatically on join. There's also shortcuts to take videos and pictures from in-game and upload them immediately to the Clan page. You can also see when someone is playing the game (it changes his status to "Playing The Sims 3").

I don't say its necessary but it's really a great tool. A lot better than any regular messenger since it's MADE for games/gamers.

As our client requested, theres space to store your findings, a nice light area to paint your masterpiece, access to the house from the carport etc.

I feel I should be in the "beginner" catergory since I have had experiance in building before, but dont exactly know my way around split levels, basements etc.

I have a seemingly small task that would be an [i]enormous[/i] help. I'm looking for someone who would be willing to keep an up-to-date list of the final entries each week. This wouldn't include those who've expressed interest, but instead just the official lot submissions. At the very least, I'd like it to be organized by level and include the simmer's name and link to their entry.

I would be willing to rec two additional assets per week for the person who would be willing to do this. (It would need to be something other than your entry for the week, as I will have already rec'd it.)

It's probably too late, but I think making a union on Gamespot would be better than the Yahoo groups. It has a better forum layout and you can sticky your posts. We could also make the main challenge page on that if that would work. It would be a good place instead of a chat system also and the photos don't make the page go crazy either.

The Build-n-Share challenges will be posted Wednesday of each week and run through the following Tuesday night/early Wednesday morning. Results will be posted one week after all entries have been submitted.

Each entry into the competition will receive an automatic rec (recommendation) and download on their entry lot. Most lots will also receive additional recs, as we now have three judges for our weekly competition! (A big thanks to Nevar530 and Shadowdrummer for volunteering to help.) Because of an outstanding turnout of firms in our first two weeks, we have broken down the challenge into four categories: brand spankin' new, beginner, intermediate, and advanced. For a description of the categories, please see the end of this post. First place will be awarded at all levels. If there are at least four entries in a category, a second place will also be announced. First place will receive 3 recs, second place will receive 2 recs, and third place (if the category is large enough) will receive 1 rec. Winners may request recs on a particular build/s by providing links to the related lots once results are posted.

Weekly challenges also create an opportunity for community on the forum site. We get to know one another’s names, share news, builds, and positive words. This is a chance to get your name out there, and hopefully make a few friends along the way.

[size=18][b]The rules:[/b][/size]
All entries must be original work. Any competitor who submits another builder’s work will be disqualified and banned from any future Build-n-Share challenge. These competitors will also be removed from the Yahoo! Group 321 Builders’ Boulevard if they have chosen to join (membership of the Yahoo! group is not required to enter a Build-a-Lot challenge).

Any object that is purchased from the Sims 3 store may not be on my system, so please realize that when I judge, I may see a substituted item instead. You may use these objects, just please recognize this caveat of the store.

Please try to post one photo with your official lot entry post. For information on how we will handle photos this week, please see the related post below. IPhotos are nice to publicize your lot anyway, so you could use them then as well.

[u]Please announce your official lot posting using the entry form below[/u] Make sure to leave the "Official Entry" label big. If you need to reformat it, you can do this by highlighting the desired text and then selecting "Big" in the font box above. This will help us see the entries in a sea of posts with no pics to guide us.

Sitting back in your chair, you take a sip of coffee. You release a contented sigh and congratulate yourself. You finished the build for Cody Klepto. It wasn’t easy, especially with that budget, but you did it.

Taking another sip of coffee, you open the daily paper.

[size=18]Family homeless after Tuesday disaster[/size]

[i]A man and his son are without a home this morning after a meteor struck their Sunset Valley home Tuesday.

“After picking up my son from school, I returned home only to find a massive, smoking meteor had crushed it,” Frank Padre, owner of the home, said Tuesday.

“Now we are working with insurance to build another,” he said. “They said the damage was too great and it cannot be repaired.”

Frank and his son Sammy have resided in Sunset Valley for the past five years.

Sammy, who has a love for all things space-related, says he still has not lost his interest in the night sky.

“The meteor was so cool! I’ve never seen anything like it,” he said.[/i]

You put down your coffee, give the rest of the story a quick skim, and flip to the editorial section. Finding what you need, you pick up the phone.

Three hours later, Frank walks into your office.

“We can’t thank you enough for your call,” he says as he enters.

“When I saw the story, I just had to do something,” you tell him. “What do you hope to have in your new home?”

“Well,” he begins, “I’d really like to have a nice bedroom for my son.”

“He seems like a great kid. Such a love of space! I know it’s probably a touchy subject, but would you like me to play off of that for his room?”

He laughs, “Yes, that would be fine. It can always serve as a reminder of his close encounter. I’d also really like to give him a play area outside. He loves the outdoors.”

“What about you, anything you want?” you ask.

“I love to cook, so a nice kitchen would be wonderful. And we love to grill. If we could have an entry to a covered patio from the kitchen, that would be very handy.”

“OK. So a space-themed room for Sammy, an outdoor play area, and a nice kitchen with an attached, covered outdoor patio area. Anything else?”

“I’d really like mostly golds and oranges for the walls. Sammy loves blue. I think some turquoise in a few places would be nice. In his room, you can do whatever you think fits the space theme.”

“And your budget is $35,000? I think we should be able to handle that!” you tell him. “ We’ll see you next Wednesday! And tell Sammy I say, ‘hello.’”

Frank smiles as he leaves.

[b][size=18]Covered Patio[/size][/b]
To build a covered patio, here's what I usually do.
1. Build the house (walls) as you would like it.
2. Decide how big you want the patio area to be. It might be helpful to have tiles there to outline it.
3. Enclose the desired patio area with walls (don't worry, they won't be there long).
4. Roof as you like. Autoroof should now encompass the patio, as it is part of the "house." If you don't like this look, you can turn autoroof off and build the roof as you wish.
5. Turn autoroof off. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT! If you don't do this, your roof will be gone in the next step.
6. Delete the patio walls (except the one that is actually a wall to the house).
7. Add columns, fences, etc. to decorate and "hold up" the roof. For cost, you can again use the deck foundation. Create a little square where you want the deck "pillar" to be. Hold down shift and drag another deck piece on top of the first. You now have your deck "pillar."

How was that issue regarding the value of the house again?
One had to build the entire house in one go or the game would automatically add a cost to the lot? I think I read that somewhere in this thread but I can't seem to find it anymore :S

It's actually a bit worse than that. If you exit and re-enter the value of the house go down.

It could be seen as a way to cheat.

For some reason, when I have Xfire on The Sims 3 gets stuck on the first loading screen. I tested it and I'm positive that it's Xfire. Anybody else have the problem?

My computer is plenty fast enough so that's not the problem.

Ohh, lots of activity since I was here.

The most pressing...entering and exiting the lot. This is a bigger build, so I don't expect everyone to be able to do it all in one sitting. Just be sure you're not doing it repeatedly trying to get in a bunch of extras. I noticed last time I was building that once that initial devalue took place (1 exit), it didn't go down except for any new objects I had placed since last time.

Basically, just don't try to build a mansion on 35K. And obviously, don't go over. Even if it is 35, 013, you're over. (I usually go delete a lightbulb or something)

Funny, I was feeling this way too!

Addict - your storylines are excellent. I also like the way you've laid out the first page of this - oh and the tutorials and tips.

I'm not in the list at the beginning though but I'm sure that with all the interest & so many houses to judge that you've just missed me off. I think I'm an intermediate though I still have loads to learn & bring more enthusiasm than skill to the drafting table. I think I chose Fudge2Grid as a firm name (for some strange reason) - probably will abbreviate it to F2G - oh, that sounds vaguely rude - perhaps not! I'll shut up now as I'm losing the plot & will stick to not abbreviating.

My only problem now is that the cat has just walked off with my pen & I wanted to write down details of the new challenge...

Yet another creative challenge, yay! I have family in town this week but will hopefully manage to get a few hours in each night to work on it.

This depreciation problem worries me...It is seriously not possible for me to finish a house in one session or even three for that matter! I have way too many interruptions on a daily basis with my baby etc, etc. Other than leaving my laptop on with the game running for a week straight (which isn't going to happen) I will always need to exit a few times. I hope this isn't going to end up being a issue...From what I've seen the value doesn't seem to depreciate that much, I will keep track of it closely this time around though.

Anyhow! Looking forward to getting started and seeing everyones concepts on this build!

BTW - GREAT job organizing this thread - I'm glad you chose to take advantage of the sticky.

Hello! You don't have to hurry to much, you have until June 24th (at 7am EST) to submit your house. You can think about a firm name too. Follow the story for Build-n-Share Weekly Challenge #3 to make sure your house follow every specifics! Then, good luck!
